The Fall-Out from Winter: Potholes on the Street

For weeks, Germany has been gripped by winter. But now that the snow and ice is thawing, the extent of the damage caused by the severe winter is becoming apparent. The streets are strewn with potholes.

Car drivers are annoyed, and the damage isn't being repaired because public funds are just too tight. The police are therefore putting up signs calling for a 30km per hour speed limit. We went to Hamburg to see what's going on.

Series: Flashback: 1909 - The First Beauty Queen

The first beauty contest was held in Germany in 1909. It was won by Gera Dopieralski from what was then East Prussia. Her award was a 20 Mark coin.

After a long break, the contests started up again in 1927 and took place every year until 1933, when they were banned by the Nazis. They were then revived again in 1950, and eventually Miss Deutschland became Miss Germany - at least in the former West Germany. In communist East Germany, meanwhile, they were banned. The first beauty contests in the reunified country were held in 1990.
